I would expect subscripts to straddle the baseline (though not necessarily vertically centered). That is the convention I have always seen for chemical typesetting. And how I approach them in my font…3 -

Also, Apple licensed a single style of Big Caslon for distribution with MacOS. But I don’t believe it is installed by default and may need to be downloaded/activated through the system app Font Book.1
